VALLEY FORD, Sonoma County — A Highway 1 safety initiative launched in August 2025 covered approximately 58.3 miles of Sonoma County’s coastal road, beginning near Valley Ford and running north to the Mendocino County line.

Caltrans described a $5 million project to cut grooves into the centerline and restripe the road, giving drivers an audible and physical warning if their vehicle begins to drift. The department also announced bicycle pullouts along the route as part of efforts to reduce conflicts on the winding highway.

This announcement describes the project’s original scope and schedule. It does not, by itself, confirm that every pullout is open or that no later maintenance work is required. The highway’s steep grades and narrow sections remain important considerations for people driving or cycling.

Practical information

Road users should observe current pavement markings, stay alert in fog and rain, and use real-time Caltrans notices rather than archived construction dates when planning trips.
