VALLEY FORD, Sonoma County — People interested in kayaking on the Estero Americano near Valley Ford should understand the difference between public rights on navigable water and permission to cross private land to launch a boat.

Sonoma County’s public-access planning appendix states that recreational use of portions of the estuary has been limited by the absence of developed access sites and by conflicts around private property. The document describes a 127-acre Sonoma Land Trust preserve, with access traditionally restricted to occasional guided outings, and notes the need for additional legal access arrangements.

The county’s proposed water-trail plan is not proof that the Valley Ford Estero Road bridge is a public launch or that private roads can be used freely. The estuary also contains sensitive habitat that can be harmed by unmanaged activity.

Practical information

Prospective paddlers should identify a confirmed legal launch point and check estuary conditions, tides and the land manager’s most recent rules before traveling. The source is the Coastal Commission’s public-access appendix, pages 90–91.
