VALLEY FORD, Sonoma County — Caltrans and coastal partners are studying how to make Highway 1 safer for people walking and cycling through Valley Ford.

The public planning page explains that an initial technical safety assessment was completed in 2025 and that community engagement took place in spring 2026. The agency asked residents and highway users to evaluate nine potential bicycle and pedestrian changes, with a draft planning study scheduled for summer or fall 2026 and an implementation plan targeted for the end of the year.

These ideas are still part of a planning process. The existence of nine options does not mean that the state has funded or installed all of them, and no single improvement should be described as approved construction without a separate decision.

Practical information

People who cross the highway to reach businesses, homes or community gathering places can review the study area and contact Caltrans about missing crossings, roadside speeds and difficult bicycle connections.
